POSTER: DICK ELFERS (1910-1990) HET EXPRESSIONISME. 1949. 41x27 inches. Druck de Bussy, Amsterdam.
DICK ELFERS (1910-1990) HET EXPRESSIONISME. 1949.
41x27 inches. Druck de Bussy, Amsterdam.
Condition B+: minor staining in margins; chipping and losses at edges; creases in image. Brittle paper.
Before the war Elfers was mostly involved with designing posters. After the war, he became more involved with the technical aspect of lithography, joining the ranks of what Pieter Brattinga refers to as true artists, defined as "lithographers and painters in their own right who draw the color separations on the zinc plates." Elfers took this hands-on role for all the posters he designed for cultural events and for exhibitions like this one. He has a rich figurative style and uses strong basic colors, organizing his images like flamboyant paper patchwork quilts. This subject fits perfectly with that unique style: A melancholic portrait in crude, vivid colors. Dutch 249.
