POSTER: EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER (1890-1954).
EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER (1890-1954) THE FLEA. 1926.
40X24 3/4 inches, 101 1/2x62 1/2 cm. Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, Ltd, London
Condition B+: tears, wrinkles and discoloration at edges; creases and minor foxing in image. Paper.
Kauffer designed several posters for the Science Museum. His first, in 1922 was a rather classical image of a rocket ship. He followed it in 1923 with an image of a wooly mammoth surrounded by elaborate decorative elements. By 1926, Kauffer went off in a totally unexpected direction, highlighting an insect often associated with pestilence and plague. He gives a triple representation of the bug, graphically suggesting its ability to jump around quickly. Kauffer also uses a "fast moving" typographic technique. It is an unusual poster and very rare. Kauffer 107.
