GUSTAV KLUTSIS (1895-1944) [1ST OF MAY / INTERNATIONAL PROLETARIAN SOLIDARITY DAY]. 1930.
41 1/8x29 1/8 inches. Chentrezdata, Moscow.
Condition B+: restored losses, repaired tears and minor overpainting in margins; vertical and horizontal folds. Framed.
In the traditional photomontage style that he championed, this iconic image is a textbook example of Klutsis's powerful design principles. The photomontage is separated by a flagpole held by young working class heroes, quite literally carrying the red banner of the Soviet state. On one side is a sepia-toned photo of a huge crowd calling for international solidarity, on the other the flat red of the flag that is not so much seen as suggested. The typography is arranged at an asymmetrical angle providing further energy to the image and to the poster's exhortation to the masses to continue their struggle. Utopia p. 53.
