HENRY GEORGE GAWTHORN (1879-1941) A PIGSTICKING MEET / VISIT INDIA.
38 1/2x48 3/4 Shardlow Ltd., London.
Condition B: restored losses, repaired tears, overpainting and creases in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds.
A graphic rendering of the exotic, decadent and truly upper-class sport, pig hunting, conducted on elephant-back in the Indian bush. In many of his finest posters, Gawthorn employed his signature, stylized graphic ability, to depict the privileged classes engaging in their exclusive and elegant pastimes. However, unlike his posters promoting golfing, or sea-side resorts, this image of hunting wild boar in India on elephant-back is even more exotic and decadent.
