POSTER: ILS SEFTELOVICS (DATES UNKNOWN). PRIN
ILS SEFTELOVICS (DATES UNKNOWN) PRINCESSE BARTIRA / MASCOTTE. Circa 1930.
39 1/4x27 inches, 99 1/2x68 1/2 cm.
Condition B+: repaired tears, overpainting and restoration in margins and image.
Following the popularity and success of the Revue Negre and the Blackbirds who performed in Paris and all over Europe, black performers began to proliferate on to the entertainment scene in Europe in the 1930s. Many of them, such as Princess Bartira remain virtually anonymous. What is most unusual about this poster is that it advertises a performance in Latvia, hardly a country known for either its entertainment scene or its cultural interest in African American performers. This dynamic image presents the performer entering the poster, as if appearing on stage, with a large inviting eye beckoning the public.
