POSTER: J. ROBERTS KONLEIN (1901-?) PEUGEOT. 1934. 62x47 inches. H. Chachoin, Paris.
J. ROBERTS KONLEIN (1901-?) PEUGEOT. 1934.
62 7/8x47 1/8 inches. H. Chachoin, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears in marins; creases and abrasions in margins and image; horizontal folds.
This is another example of work produced by the Damour Brothers which is signed by the artist (see lot 113). In their handling of the Peugeot account, the Damours would alternately use anonymous designs created by their studio, or employ freelance artists who would sign their names to the finished product. Roberts, for example, is known to have designed three posters for Peugeot (all done in 1934-35). No other examples of his work have surfaced. This dynamic poster advertises a whole range of Peugeot cars, identified by their model numbers. A flashy sedan is speeding through the zeros, at a rakish angle that further emphasizes speed. The color scheme is the traditional French tri-color. It is the kind of clear and efficient creation for which the Damours were renowned.
