JACINT BOFARULL (1903-?) DUNHILL / BERISTAIN. 1932.
38 7/8x27 3/8 inches.
Condition B+: repaired tears and creases in margins and image.
After studying fine arts, Bofarull became a successful graphic designer. Active in Barcelona, his work was both commercial and political. At the start of the Spanish Civil War, in 1936, he was a founding member of the (Communist) Revolutionary Committee of the Syndicate of Designers, and he produced propaganda for them throughout the conflict (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction #2079, lot 175). Beristain was a luxury goods store for which Bofarull designed three posters, each elegantly promoting one product (luggage and travel goods, rifles, and Dunhill lighters). They are the best mannerist Art Deco posters produced in Spain, and this image is the most attractive of the three. Alfred Dunhill, who invented the automatic cigarette lighter after losing his arm, was so famous that his products could be marketed with only his last name.
