POSTER: JEAN LUC (DATES UNKNOWN) AQUARIUM / MONACO. 1939. 39x24 inches. Sica, Nice.
JEAN LUC (DATES UNKNOWN) AQUARIUM / MONACO. 1939.
39 1/2x24 5/8 inches. Sica, Nice.
Condition A-: creases in margins and image.
The museum and aquarium in Monaco were opened in 1910 by the reigning Prince Louis, who was himself a pioneer of oceanography. In 1926, Jean Carlu designed a revolutionary image to promote the institution (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction #2079, lot 52), using a cubist approach to depict the fish. In 1939, Luc, a local artist who designed posters for many resorts on the Riviera, was commissioned to design a new image. Thirteen years later it is a totally different artistic vision. The Art Deco years are gone and the new graphic trend is more sensuous and fluid, with a brighter palette and a more realistic approach. Riviera 475
