JERZY CZERNIAWSKI (1947 - ) PLUSKWA. 1975.
39x26 1/4 inches.
Condition A.
Czerniawski graduated from the Fine Arts School of Wroclaw and immediately embarked on a career as a stage designer and poster designer for movies and theatrical productions. Pluskwa (The Bug) is a violent satire of the bureaucracy and the petit-bourgeois world that grew during the time when Lenin initiated the NEP (New Economic Policy) that allowed the creation of certain private enterprises. Mayakowsky's play was widely criticized, even by the writer's union that tried to rein him in (without success). In the surrealistic-fantastic style that was a hallmark of Polish graphic design in the 1970s, Czerniawski presents a striking and aggressive image of the teeth of an insect ready to bite - brilliantly capturing the essence of the play. Weill 578, Dydo 284.
