POSTER: LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1972). INTERNAT
LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1972) INTERNATIONALE AUTOMOBIL-AUSSTELLUNG. 1914.
26 1/2x36 3/4 inches, 67x93 1/2 cm. Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin.
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and restoration in corners and margins; abrasions in image. Framed.
In 1911 Bernhard designed the poster advertising the Berlin Automobile Show. The poster was such a classic design that it was reused and reworked for several subsequent automobile shows in the German capital. For this 1914 version, the text in the black rectangular box has been changed. As the automobile industry grew and modernized, so too did the images on these posters. In 1925, the same concept was used but featured a racing car driver, and by 1931 (after Bernhard had immigrated to the United States), one of his studio partners depicted a different driver behind a more streamlined wheel shaft. Bernhard p. 70-71, DFP-III 202 (var), Auto Show II 24 (var).
