OSCAR RABE HANSON (1901-1926) OVER OLD INDIAN TRAILS/ THE NORTH SHORE LINE. Circa 1926.
42x28 inches. Gugler Litho, Milwaukee.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds.
An idealized image of a Native American, clad in a feather bonnet and holding a shield and a spear, on a grassy hill, with a full moon rising behind him. Powerful and emotive, this image captures the essence and the romantic perception of the proud people who originally inhabited America. In addition to his posters for the North Shore Line, Hanson, who died extremely young, also designed posters for the South Shore Line and the Chicago Rapid Transit Company, illustrating destinations one could reach by elevated train and subway. He is credited with designing 29 posters between 1923 and his death a few years later. His graphic style and compositional ability set him amongst the best of American designers from the period.
