POSTER: PATRICK COKAYNE KEELY (? - 1970). STA
PATRICK COKAYNE KEELY (? - 1970) STAGGERED TRAVELLING / WORKING HOURS. Group of 3 posters. 1945.
39 1/2x24 3/4 inches, 100 1/2x63 cm. Waterlow & Sons LTD., London.
Condition A-: minor restoration in top margin; horizontal fold.
Pat Keely was an established artist from the years before the Second World War, known for his strong, stylized Art Deco style (which he used most notably in his posters for the Southern Railway). During the war he was one of the artists chosen to participate in the workplace safety series commissioned by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. He also was one of several prominent designers who went to work for the London Transport company right after the war to help the system, and commuters get back on to a peace-time footing. Here, three out of four posters in a series. The final poster depicted a man on a dromedary, whose hump delineated a bell curve representing crowds on the underground. It promoted "Staggered Working Hours" as a means to "relieve the overload of traffic" (aimed at reducing overcrowding in the London Underground.) While all of these excellent posters are less Art Deco and more practical, they remain in Keely's pure style, presenting important ideas effectively and even with a little humor.
