POSTER: PAUL COLIN (1892-1986). MESSIDOR. Gou

PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) MESSIDOR. Gouache maquette. 1938.
45 1/2x62 inches, 115 1/2x157 1/2 cm.
Condition B / B+: repaired tears, discoloration and skinning in margins and image.
Colin continually turned out projects (likely on many occasions designed gratis) for public interest and left-of-center causes. Such was the case with Messidor, "the weekly magazine for democratic unions." Messidor was the name of the harvest month according to the French revolutionary calendar. Founded by CGT (the Communist Union), the periodical did not last long, as the distributors refused to handle it. It is not known if this design was ever published. The image, of a large and strong working-class man staring confidently into the future is bold and eye-catching.
