The story of Amphitryon has been the subject of tragedies and comedies since it was first staged by Plautus in 185 B.C. It is the story of Alcamene, daughter of the King of Mycenae, and her betrothed, Amphitryon. Before their relationship can be consummated Amphitryon is sent to avenge the killings of Alcamene's brothers. While he is away, Zeus, who has taken Amphitryon's form, impregnates Alcamene. Their son is Hercules. Jean Giraudoux, who penned this French version, assumed that thirty-seven versions of the story had already been written, which humorously explains his title. The performance, directed by Louis Jouvet, and starring the young Jean Renoir as Amphitryon, was a critical success. Colin, who by 1929 was well established as the best Music Hall poster designer in Paris, produced a succinct masterpiece to capture the essence of this production. He shows Alcamene torn between Amphitryon in the foreground and a more majestic, stronger version of her husband (Zeus) in the background. This is the smaller format. Colin, 37, Colin Affichiste 12.
