POSTER: SAMUEL SCHWARZ (1876-1942). NAT-OPERA
SAMUEL SCHWARZ (1876-1942) NAT-OPERA. Circa 1935.
48x33 inches, 122x84 cm. Kunstdruck Luii, Amsterdam.
Condition B+: minor restored losses and overpainting in margins; light creasing in margins and image.
Very little is known about Schwarz outside of the fact that after studying in Antwerp, he went on to become a painter and graphic designer in Holland before his tragic death at Auschwitz. This poster is a splendid early opera piece. With little knowledge of the artist's oeuvre, the viewer is left to wonder whether the red horse is a subtle wink at the Fauvist horse that appears in Cappiello's Chocolat Klaus, and if the colors and sense of movement are related to the Blaue Reiter group (active in Munich from 1911-1914). In any case, it is a very good image that evokes the spirit of this very modernist production of the opera "Cavalera Rusticana." Extremely rare. Modern Dutch p. 119, no. 84.
