Karl Ernst Osthaus was an artistic visionary who founded the Folkwang Museum in Essen and was a founding member of the Werkbund. His innovation also led him to establish the Museum für Kunst in Handel und Gewerbe, the first institution truly dedicated to commercial art, in his hometown of Hagen. Starting in 1911 the museum began issuing monographs of the work of famous German poster artists (an idea that did not occur to the French during their poster golden age!). To the best of our knowledge they published six in all, dedicated to the work of Ehmcke, Klinger, Bernhard, Behrens, Gipkens and Preetorius.
