WEIMER PURSELL (1906-1974) AMERICAN AIRLINES / TO NEW YORK.
39 3/4x30 1/8 inches.
Condition A: minor wrinkles in margins.
Classic American graphic modernism in the form of this abstract, high energy street scene. Skyscrapers, shop windows, traffic-filled streets and the hustle-and-bustle of New York City life are all represented. Pursell designed several highly regarded posters for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, several World War II propaganda posters (most memorably "When you ride Alone you Ride with Hitler!") and an image for Winchester Rifles. This figurative representation is reminiscent, in color and style, of Erik Nitsche's 1947 poster "say it fast...often...in color / Subway Posters."
