For this poster advertising a Hygiene Exposition, Willy Petzold revisited and reinterpreted a poster designed for the same exhibition 20 years earlier. In 1911, Franz von Stuck used a giant eye against a starry sky to encourage passers-by to attend the exhibition (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction #2113, lot 34). In 1931, Willy Petzold paid tribute to Von Stuck by re-imagining the eye in a more contemporary manner. Petzold was the leading designer in Dresden, whose work was marked by his original, geometrical and rayonist style. Rademacher (Deutscher Plakat) p. 243, Rademacher (Masters) p. 112, Munich p. 33.
