POUND, EZRA. Group of 4 Typed Letters Signed, "Ezra Pound," and an Autograph Postcard Signed, "E.P.," to Rowfant Club member Rev. Charl

YOUNG APOSTLE OF PROVENÇAL POETRY POUND, EZRA. Group of 4 Typed Letters Signed, "Ezra Pound," and an Autograph Postcard Signed, "E.P.," to Rowfant Club member Rev. Charles Clinch Bubb, Jr., concerning private publication of his translations of Provençal poet Arnaut Daniel. Each with few manuscript additions or brief Autograph Postscript. Together 12 pages, 4to or 12mo, personal stationery; minor smudging to two signatures, folds. [London, 1917-18]

  • Notes: [1917]: ". . . I have completely changed my notions of style since doing the translations in 1911. I am in doubt whether I shall ever have the energy to re-do the whole work completely . . . . However there is a deal of work in the present mss. and perhaps having it set up as it is, would spur me on with the rest of the troubadour study.
". . . [A]t least they are the first complete work of any troubadour to be done in English, or in the original metres . . . ."
28 January 1918: ". . . [T]here is a delight in printing beautiful books. I sat over the machine in Venice when my first book was being done, and it is much more fun than sending a mss. into a modern publishing factory. . . ."
2 February 1918: ". . . With the Arnaut . . . it is very important that the Provençal and English texts face each other, line for line . . . . Where one is making so essentially a study of form, as in the Arnaut, half the value . . . would be lost if the texts did not face line [f]or line . . . ."
With the 1910 publication of his critical essays in Spirit of Romance, Pound became associated with Provençal poetry, and especially with Arnaut Daniel. In the present letters, Pound endeavors to publish his Daniel translations as a complete group for the first time. For obscure reasons, the book proposed to Clerk's Press was never published, though subsquently, revised versions of the poems have been published by others.
