[Theodorus Bailey.]

Authentic Information Relative to the Conduct of the Present & Last Administrations of the United States.

Wilmington, DE: Bonsal and Niles, 1802
32 pages. 8vo, disbound; unopened; early signature of "Thom. Montgomery, Esqr." on title page.

  • Notes: A short letter by the Democratic-Republican congressman Theodorus Bailey of New York introduces a pro-Jefferson analysis of the young nation's finances and liberties, with short notes emphasizing the perfidy of Adams and the opposition: "Who voted against the repeal of the internal taxes? Federalists. . . . Who impos'd the Stamp Tax? The Federalists, as the following proceedings will manifestly prove. . . . Who imposed that unjust and arbitrary law, called the Alien Act? The following proceedings shew it was the Federalists."

We have not identified the title page signature, but it may have been the young Kentucky lawyer Thomas Montgomery (1779-1828) who later served as a Democratic-Republican congressman starting in 1813.

Shaw & Shoemaker 1792. One in OCLC (New-York Historical Society), and none traced at auction since 1900.
