(PRESIDENTS--1831.) Major Downing Queling the Riot in the Kitchen Cabinet.

(PRESIDENTS--1831.) Major Downing Queling the Riot in the Kitchen Cabinet. Lithograph, 13 3/4 x 19 inches; minor foxing, 1-inch repaired closed tear. New York: Ezra Bisbee, circa 1831

  • Notes: Here the fictional Seba Smith character Major Jack Downing is imagined as a member of President Andrew Jackson''s informal "Kitchen Cabinet," an informal group of advisers he preferred to his actual cabinet. As the barefoot major swings a cane to break up the brawl, Jackson peers out from a darkened closet with a grin. None in OCLC, none traced at auction since 1971.
