(PRESIDENTS--1832 CAMPAIGN.) Tompkins County Republican Young Men''s Ticket. For President, Andrew Jackson.

(PRESIDENTS--1832 CAMPAIGN.) Tompkins County Republican Young Men''s Ticket. For President, Andrew Jackson. Illustrated letterpress broadside, 31 x 21 1/2 inches, signed in type by James Heath and others; folds, minor foxing, missing a 1 x 4-inch area from lower margin. Np, [1832]

  • Notes: A campaign broadside in support of Andrew Jackson''s re-election campaign from western New York. It also lists Martin Van Buren for vice president, William Marcy (later Secretary of State) for New York governor, and other candidates for state and national office.
The names of the two political parties were fluid during this period. Though Jackson (and the other candidates listed here) ran as Democrats and his opponent Henry Clay was with the National Republican Party (later merged into the Whigs), Jackson and the other Democrats here won the endorsement of "a convention of the Republican young men of the County of Tompkins," held in Ithaca. The broadside concludes with the convention''s lengthy analysis in support of its candidates, emphasizing Jackson''s first-term accomplishments and strict adherence to the Constitution. They credit Jackson with having averted "the mournful spectacle of states disunited and belligerent, and all the horrours of domestick discord and civil war." He is also praised for his "improvement of the Indians and their removal beyond the Mississippi."
Tompkins County had at least two printers during this period, in Trumansburg and Ithaca. As the convention was held in Ithaca, the local printing house Mack & Andrus would seem to be a strong possibility. None others traced, at auction or on OCLC.
