  • Notes: Issue of "The Whip & Spur!," a James Polk campaign newspaper. Volume 3, #11. [4] pages, 16 x 11 inches, on one folding sheet; folds, 4-inch tape repair to second leaf, minor wear. This Democratic paper was resurrected after having promoted Van Buren in 1840. It features a masthead cartoon juxtaposing opponent Henry Clay's campaign with William Henry Harrison's "Hard-Cider Campaign of 1840." This issue reports on the early returns from the recent election. Newport, NH, 11 November 1844.

    Issue of "The Battery," a Zachary Taylor campaign newspaper. Volume I, #3. Page [33]-48, 12 x 9 1/4 inches, on 4 folding sheets, stitched; folds, moderate foxing and wear. The Battery was a pro-Whig weekly launched to support Zachary Taylor's candidacy. This issue has a masthead illustration showing Taylor's Democratic opponent Lewis Cass complaining of "noise and confusion" as General Taylor's troops fire a battery of cannons and Taylor utters his well-known phrase from the Battle of Buena Vista, "A little more grape! Captain Bragg!" Washington, 20 July 1848.
