(PRESIDENTS--1848 CAMPAIGN.) Group of 4 documents from Pennsylvania's members of the Electoral College.

PENNSYLVANIA ELECTS ZACHARY TAYLOR (PRESIDENTS--1848 CAMPAIGN.) Group of 4 documents from Pennsylvania's members of the Electoral College. 4 manuscript sheets, each about 13 x 17 inches; governor's certification with separations at folds and tape repairs on verso, only minor wear and folds to elector certificates, and some soiling and seal tears to envelope. Harrisburg, PA, 6-7 December 1848

  • Notes: The election of 1848 was a close one. Zachary Taylor won with 163 votes in the Electoral College, beating out Democrat Lewis Cass with 127. Pennsylvania's 26 votes gave Taylor the margin of victory. He won the state with only 50.28% of the popular vote. Includes the certification of the 26 electors on official state letterhead, signed by Governor William F. Johnston and Secretary Townsend Haines and completed with the state seal; the certificates signed by all 26 electors casting the state's votes for Taylor and his vice-president Millard Fillmore, 6 December; and the 7 December transmittal envelope to the United States Senate certifying the results, also signed by all 26 electors, and receipted by Judge John Kintzing Kane on 11 December. Most notable among the electors was Andrew G. Curtin (later the state's war governor). Provenance: sold by Argosy Books to the consignor in 1962.
