The Last Gun! / Federalism and Its Allies Exposed!

[New London, CT], 1 November [1852]
Letterpress broadsheet, 2 pages on one sheet, 16¼ x 8¼ inches; folds, minor wear, "New London" added in early pencil.

  • Notes: This broadside promotes a lecture against Franklin Pierce and the Democratic Party to be held the evening before the 1852 presidential election. The orator was the Rev. Samuel W. Coggshall of Thompsonville, CT, and the lecture was held at Dart's Hall on Bradley Street (now Atlantic Street) in New London.  The main target of the broadsheet is Pierce supporter John Van Buren (son of the 8th president), who had opposed slavery in the 1848 election but had recently appeared in New London to support Pierce and the Fugitive Slave Law. One essay asks (and answers) the question: "Is he a traitor to liberty?"

The lecture was held to promote the third-party Free Soil Party, a.k.a. "the Free Democracy." It mocks in passing the clumsy efforts of Winfield Scott to woo Irish voters to the Whig Party: "The Free Democracy do not profess any special love for "that rich Irish brogue," but would nevertheless respectfully invite our adopted citizens to attend their meeting."
