Notes from White House residents to chef Hans Raffert.

  • Notes: Hans F. Raffert (1927-2005) was a chef at the White House from 1969 until his retirement in 1992. This collection includes 6 notes from his famous patrons, two First Ladies and a presidential daughter.

    Nancy Reagan, 4 Autograph Notes Signed as "Mrs. R" or "Mrs. Reagan": "I'll ring in the morning for breakfast. I'm going to try to sleep a little later" (6 July 1984, her 63rd birthday); "The President will have his breakfast in the study because I'm going to sleep in. I'll ring when I awaken" (5 November 1985); "I won't have breakfast here, just some juice at 8 in beauty parlor" (20 July 1986); and "We're leaving a 7:30 wake-up call, and we want cold cereal instead of eggs" (undated). The dates are added at bottom in a different hand, and the stationery of the 1985 note has been traced over.

    Barbara Bush, Autograph Note Signed on her White House card: "Hans, I hope your staff enjoys their tea and coffee in these mugs! You are the best! The very best!" (13 March 1990).

    Amy Carter, Autograph Note Signed on a commercial greeting card: "I love your food" (undated, circa 1977-1981). 

    With--a folder of clippings and ephemera from Raffert's 1991 trip accompanying President George H.W. Bush to Moscow, 1991 (23 items).
