SIGEND AND INSCRIBED BY PRINCE PRINCE, RICHARD. Fish Story. 4to, stiff silver wrappers with a mounted original photograph. first edition, signed and inscribed by prince. Np, 1976

  • Notes: From the Library of Bevan and Michele Davies.

An early, unbound artist's book by Prince. This copy was featured in the Neuberger Museum exhibition, "Fugitive Artist, The Early Work of Richard Prince 1974-77," in 2007. A publication by Michael Lobel accompanied the show.

Prince's witty narrative (apparently handwritten by his girlfriend), which is underscored by a typewritten text, tells the story of a collector who asked the artist to buy a living fish as an artwork. The artist declines, writing: "You can't own the idea of this work while its [sic] alive."
