- Notes: first edition. Re-issued the same year as The History of the United States for 1796, this first edition is more scarce. Callender's anti-Federalist criticisms, including a ficticious charge that John Adams endorsed a proposal during the Revolution that Loyalists should be executed and the accusation that Alexander Hamilton was corrupt, prompted in part the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts, under which Callender was later prosecuted.
