PROTEST OVER A SCREENING OF BIRTH OF A NATION (FILM.) Griffith, W. D. Small archive of materials relating to a protest over the showing of "Birth of a Nation." Together, 17 pieces, including petitions from college students, a civil rights group, a telegram from Walter White (then head of the NAACP), letters on "Birth of a Nation" letterhead, etc. Various sizes. Vp, 1946
- Notes: should be seen. In the Spring of 1946, the playhouse at the campus of the University of Wisconsin planned to show Griffith's 1915 film. A protest ensued almost immediately over the propriety of showing a film that was unabashedly racist.
