  • Notes: Regina Drolet, the likely recipient of this photograph, was a French Canadian governess and nanny to both Quentin Roosevelt and his brother Archie between 1904 and 1910.

When the United States entered World War I, Quentin Roosevelt joined the Army and was sent to France, eventually becoming a pilot. During aerial combat in July 1918, Roosevelt was shot down near Coulonges-Cohan in northern France, where the German military buried his remains with battlefield honors. Before burial, a photograph was taken of the wreckage and made into a postcard that could be easily circulated, serving as propaganda for the Axis war effort.

With--Photograph postcard, unsigned, showing Quentin Roosevelt's body beside his mangled biplane in July 1918. 3½x5½ inches.
  • Condition: With Letter of Authenticity by Americana dealer Jonathan H. Mann citing collector Peter C. Scanlon and Lt. Colonel Gregory Wynn as having confirmed that the handwriting on this photograph is that of Quentin Roosevelt.
