Matsushima is a group of islands in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. There are some 260 tiny islands (shima) covered in pines (matsu). It is ranked as one of the original "Three Views of Japan," the other two being the pine-clad sandbar in Amanohashidate, Kyoto, and the Itsukushima shrine, Hiroshima. This list of Japan's three most celebrated scenic sights is attributed to a scholar Hayashi Gaho in 1643; a new list of three was decided upon via election in 1915.
