Johnson (1860-1944), teacher, lawyer, businessman and politician, was born a slave in a wealthy home in Raleigh. One of 11 children, he managed to get an excellent education, eventually attending Atlanta University. Despite his success and affluence he was the victim of harsh prejudice and moved to New York in 1907
