Oklahoma City: Universal Publishing Company, 1926

  • Notes: first edition. rare, oclc locates 6 copies. Drusilla Dunjee Houston (1876-1941), journalist and historian was born to ex-slaves in Harper's Ferry West Virginia, one of ten siblings, only five of whom survived childhood. Their father, the Rev John William Dunjee was an evangelical Baptist minister and the family traveled widely before joining early settlers from the South seeking opportunities in Oklahoma in the 1880s. In 1914, Drusilla's brother Roscoe founded the Oklahoma Black Dispatch. As an associate editor, Drusilla wrote for the paper, often on the subject of race history. Her plan was for a multi-volume history of the African race, and while she is said to have completed it, only this volume and a recently published second volume (Wonderful Ethiopians of the Cushite Empire, Vol. II. Buffalo, edited by Peggy Brooks Bertram) have survived. Houston's work has a great deal in common with race historians like Joel Augustus Rogers.
