(RACISM.) VAN EVRIE, J. H. White Supremacy and Negro Subordination.

(RACISM.) VAN EVRIE, J. H. White Supremacy and Negro Subordination. Frontispiece and five color lithographic plates. 8vo, original green cloth, blocked in black and stamped in gilt on the spine, edges lightly rubbed; bookplate of the recipient. New York, 1870

  • Notes: second edition, inscribed by the author at the top of the preface. An extremely racist work, written as a reaction to a pamphlet published late in 1863 titled "Miscegenation," which ostensibly advocated the mixing of the races. It prompted Dr. J.H. Van Evrie, a radical Democrat, to issue an anonymous pamphlet in response, which he titled "Subgenation: The Theory of the Normal Relation of the Races-- An Answer to 'Miscegenation.'" Van Evrie expanded on his pamphlet to produce the present work.
