Fact Sheet on the House Committee on Un-American Activities, and a related legal brief.

New York: Progressive Citizens of America, [1947]
24 mimeograph pages, 14 x 8½ inches, staple-bound in one corner; horizontal fold, final leaf detached, some leaves toned, a few contemporary pencil marks.

  • Notes: Produced in opposition to the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) allied with Senator Joseph McCarthy. HUAC became a permanent standing committee in 1945 and by late 1947 had launched into the hearings which generated the infamous "Hollywood blacklist." This packet by the short-lived Progressive Citizens of America focusses on "the committee's shameful performance at the Hollywood hearings . . . for those Americans who are concerned at the damage already done to the Bill of Rights." It details the committee's known "Fascist support," its disregard for due process, and a list on Hollywood figures being investigated. None in OCLC.

With--"In the Supreme Court of the United States, October Term, 1950, Eugene Dennis [et al] v. United States of America . . . Brief for the United States." Folding "Organization Chart of Communist Party, USA." x, 329 pages. 8vo, original printed wrappers, minor wear; minor dampstaining toward rear. "Dennis v. United States" was an important Supreme Court case which decided in 1951 that the right to free speech and assembly did not extend to plotting for an overthrow of the government. Perennial presidential candidate Gus Hall was one of the plaintiffs.
