"MORE DANGEROUS THAN A THOUSAND RIOTERS" (RADICALISM.) Gogler, L.; photographer. Cabinet card of the labor organizer Lucy Parsons. Albumen photograph, 5 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches, on original mount, captioned in gilt "Mrs. L.E. Parsons, copyright and published by herself"; minimal wear. New York, [1886]

  • Notes: The radical labor organizer Lucy Parsons (1851-1942) was married in 1871 to Albert Parsons (1848-1887), a white Confederate veteran turned anarchist. They removed from Texas to Chicago in 1873 because of controversy over their mixed-race marriage. Albert was hanged in 1887 for his alleged role in the Haymarket bomb attack. Lucy continued the fight after his death, publishing "Freedom: A Revolutionary Anarchist-Communist Monthly" and helping to launch the Industrial Workers of the World in 1905. The Chicago Police Department once called her "more dangerous than a thousand rioters." She delivered speeches to striking workers into her ninetieth year. Parsons was thought by some contemporaries and scholars to have been born into slavery in Virginia, but did not identify as African-American; her death certificate listed her parents as Mexican.
