- Notes: Frederick Hubbard (1817-1894) was an 1836 graduate of New York's Hamilton College and went on to a career as a civil engineer. His notebook includes numerous pen and ink renderings of railroad bridges in New York and Pennsylvania dating from 1836 to 1845, some completed in watercolor. Identified larger drawings include a bridge over the Ramapo in Rockland County, NY, 1836; a Michigan Central Railroad bridge in Detroit, 1838; a bridge over the Pennsylvania Canal in Juniatta Valley; a bridge over the Erie Canal in Utica, NY; and a culvert over Allen's Creek on the Michigan Central Railroad. The notebook also includes calligraphical studies, a poem, astronomical observations, and other random jottings. with--additional papers found inside the notebook, including architectural drawings titled "C.B. Stuart's Cottage, Athens, Tioga Point, Pa.," nd; and "Cathedral of St. Peter, York," 1841 and--"Map of the Drains in the Lots on Bleecker Street" [Utica], 1834.
