Since 1951, the International Design Conference in Aspen (IDCA) founded by Walter Paepcke, president of the Container Corporation, emulated the Bauhaus philosophy. By promoting a close collaboration between modern art, design, and commerce, it served as a forum for designers to discuss and disseminate current developments in the related fields of graphic arts, industrial design, and architecture. Ralph E. Eckerstrom was a designer and director of design for the Container Corporation of America and later co-founder and president of Unimark International from 1963-79. He also served as past president and chairman of the International Design Conference. John Massey was art director of the University of Illinois Press in 1957 (following Eckerstrom) and later invited by Eckerstrom to become a graphic designer and director at CCA where he oversaw the continuation of Container's "Great Ideas of Western Man" campaign. In 1964, Massey opened the Center for Advanced Research in Design (CARD).
