RALPH EUGENE MEATYARD (1925-1972)
Untitled (Still life with doll). Circa 1961; printed circa 1970.
Silver print, the image measuring 6¾x7¼ inches (17.1x18.4 cm,), with Madelyn O. Meatyard's signature in ink on verso.

Provenance
Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York; to a Private European Collection in 1999

Ralph Eugene Meatyard made his living as an optician in Lexington while creating enigmatic staged photographs featuring his family or friends. He would first pick up a specific environment and look for a specific light at a precise moment before placing his subjects in the frame. His photographs result as simultaneously tender, surreal, and theatrical compositions.

  • Condition: Meatyard' s photograph Untitled (Still life with doll), circa 1961; printed circa 1970 is overall in excellent condition. The print is rich and contrasty, with fine details and bright highlights.

Under close examination in strong raking light, the surface of the print is flawless.

There are no margins on the print, and the extreme edges evidence a few minuscule tiny chips as well a minuscule soft crease on the tip of the lower right corner. This is minor and does not detract from the overall presentation at all.

The verso is clean, with Madelyn O. Meatyard's signature in ink and inventory notations in pencil on verso.

There is also the date 1961 written in pencil on the back of the mat and a label with Meatyard's typed credit, date and notation vintage, but we see some response to the black light, and would rather date it a bit later.
