Provenance
Gift from the Artist to Judith Gerber in 1977; Swann Galleries, Sale 2017, lot 130, October 19, 2004; to the Collection of Neil Berzak

  • Condition: Steiner's exquisite "Lollipop" photograph, 1923; printed before 1977 is in nearly excellent condition. The print is rich and contrasty, with bright highlights and deep black tones, and replete with fine details.

Under close examination, the print evidences a narrow band of emulsion loss on its extreme lower edge. While apparent, this is not overly distracting. Otherwise, the surface is clean and neat.

The print has no margins, and minuscule chips may be found around the edges, but it remains unobtrusive.

The mount is clean, with Steiner's signature and negative date in pencil on mount recto. Two remnants of archival tape are visible on the upper edge of the verso.

This work is accompanied by a letter of provenance by Judith Gerber who interviewed Ralph Steiner for AFTERIMAGE magazine as well as a copy of the March 1978 issue.
