RALSTON CRAWFORD (1906-1978) Vent on the Deck of the Queen Mary.

RALSTON CRAWFORD (1906-1978)
Vent on the Deck of the Queen Mary. Silver print, the image measuring 6 5/8x9 3/8 inches (16.8x23.8 cm.), flush mounted, with Crawford's signature and his Estate stamp with the reference number 35 in ink on mount verso. 1951

Crawford is known for his depictions of industry in a Precisionist style. He was born in Ontario, near Niagara Falls, and moved to Buffalo, New York in 1910. He studied at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, The Pennsylvania Academy of Art, the Barnes Foundation (where he came into contact with masterpieces by Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse) and the Hugh Breckenridge School.

Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

Precisionism evolved from its roots in European Cubism with its sharp edges and flattened forms, but American Precisionists focused primarily on depicting industrial subjects. Crawford's work emphasized American symbols of industry such as skyscrapers, bridges, silos and machinery, creating dynamic, modern and innovative compositions out of flattened forms.

  • Condition: Crawford's photograph is overall in very good condition. The print is neat and contrasty, with beautiful delineations of tones.

Under close examination in strong raking light, the surface of the print is slightly inconsistent with light surface craquelure-like impressions and scuffs throughout the image area, but only visible when viewing the print under careful, strongly-lit viewing conditions.

Flush mounted to a board. Its edges are clean and neat, as well as the verso.

A wonderful example of his abstract geometrical photographs.
