RARE BROADSIDE

LUTHER, MARTIN Gnade unde frede in Christo [etc.]. Broadside, 358x262 mm; edges ragged, some minor soiling and discoloration, scattered wormholes slightly affecting text on bottom 3 lines, otherwise generally not impairing legibility. [Wittenberg: Melchior Lotter the Younger, 1523]

  • Notes: rare low german translation of a letter from luther to the city council of stettin in Pomerania (now Szczecin in Poland), which had requested his opinion in its dispute with local clergy over the exemption of church properties from taxes; the original version first appeared the same year in Erfurt. Although the council was motivated in this case not by reformist inclinations but by the desire to extend its authority over religious institutions and to gain additional tax revenue, this document represents the first formal contact between Luther and Stettin at a time when Lutheran ideas were gradually being disseminated in Pomerania, where Lutheranism was ultimately to become the official faith. Not long after their initial exchange the council requested him to send a Lutheran preacher to the city. Eberhard Völker, Die Reformation in Stettin (2003), pages 32-38.
