RAY JOHNSON Spit for Barry McCallion.

RAY JOHNSON
Spit for Barry McCallion.

A complete mailing of 66 envelopes addressed to members of the New York Correspondance School, 1972-73. Ex-collection Barry McCallion, of the Fluxus Movement, New York. Many containing cutouts, small drawings (many with the artist's personal logo, a bunny head), stamps, collages, and various ephemera, with notes by Johnson pertaining to the theme of spit.

Ray Johnson (1927-1995), a central figure in the Fluxus movement, is considered the first artist to have participated formally in "Mail Art," the practice of utilizing the postal service to send and receive small works of art. He developed the New York Correspondance School for both artists and lay interlocutors to exchange often simple drawings, cutouts and stickers. In 1970, The Whitney Museum of American Art organized the exhibition, Ray Johnson: New York Correspondance School, effectively establishing the cultural and art historical validity and importance of Johnson's ongoing project.
