- Notes: first edition. Albert Talmon Morgan (1842-1922), a white man, left Oberlin to join the Union Army. After the war he went to Yazoo, MS where he worked as a cotton farmer, sheriff, and local tax collector. He married Carolyn Victoria Highgate, the daughter of a free black educator. The book chronicles his difficulties and exposes the efforts of old slaveholders and Klan members to stop social reform through intimidation and violence. Howes M75; Afro-Americana 6820.
