REGINALD MARSH Huber's Museum.

REGINALD MARSH
Huber's Museum.

Lithograph on Chine appliqué, 1928. 222x346 mm; 8 3/4x13 1/2 inches, full margins. Edition of approximately 35. Signed and inscribed "35 proofs" in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this scarce, early print. Sasowsky 14.

Huber's was New York's most famous dime museum. Located at 106 East 14th Street, it boasted a plethora of curiosities; most famously, a forgery of Abraham Lincoln's condolence letter to Lydia Bixby, who had lost 5 sons in the Civil War. The museum also showcased vaudeville acts as well as circus and sideshow attractions. A then 17-year-old Ehrich Weiss, otherwise known as Harry Houdini, perfected his earliest escape routines there.

In addition, Huber's Museum could claim to be America's first movie theater, it was the first nickelodeon to accompany live acts with relevant film shorts. Huber's closed its doors on July 16, 1910. Disappointed would-be patrons arrived to find the word "Finis" written in large letters across the entrance.
