REGINALD MARSH Portfolio titled "Photographs of New York" containing50 posthumous prints from Marsh's original negatives, with many viewsof Coney Island, including beachniks enjoying the summer sun, bathing beauty pageants, boardwalk businesses, and sideshow banners; a plethora of scenes depicting the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, particularly areas around Union Square and Chinatown; as well as pictures of longshoremen and boats on the Hudson River, African- American street life, and subway scenes; with a portrait of Marsh, in his studio, painting an unidentified man. Silver prints, late 1930s; printed 1977. 5x7 inches, with a facsimile handstamp signature and edition notations "22/25," in pencil, on verso; in a cloth clamshell box. E5,000/7,500 Reginald Marsh (1898-1954) is best known as a "realist" painter and printmaker. The wonderful assortment of images in this portfolio, made with a 35mm Leica, concentrate on the energetic, and seamy, side of the New York that he loved: the flophouses, subway interiors, circus sideshows, and colorful street scenes. The photographs also focus on men in the city, whether they'rehaving their shoes shined, frolicking on the beach, or simply hangingout.
