  • Notes: Abel Thornton (1799-1827) was born and raised in Johnston, RI, where he was ordained to preach. This diary was written as he toured New Hampshire, western New York, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere, preaching anywhere he was welcome along the way, to crowds large and small. In Seneca Lake, NY, "there were two men come to meeting that were intoxicated and endeavored to disturb the meeting" (15 October 1825). In Newfield, NY, he visited a new convert's home: "While I prayed with them, they kneeled and wept bitterly. I then bid them adieu, and at my departure they contributed 61 cents to me, for which I endeavored to feel thankful" (25 October 1825). Overcome by homesickness, he considered leaving for home while on an extended stint in Troy, PA, "but the brethren began to intercede for me to stay, and souls began to look as precious in this place as any other, so I began to pray for the Lord to take Rhode Island out of my mind" (9 November 1825). The later part of the diary was written in Rhode Island, where Thornton died soon after returning. This diary was published as "The Life of Elder Abel Thornton" (Providence, 1828), pages 37 to 109, with many stylistic revisions.
