REMBRANDT VAN RIJN A Peasant Replying "Dats Niet."

REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
A Peasant Replying "Dats Niet."

Etching, 1634. 110x40 mm; 4 3/8x1 5/8 inches, wide margins. Ex-collection Friedrich August II (Lugt 971, lower right recto). A superb, dark, crisp and evenly-printed impression of this extremely scarce etching, with strong contrasts

The current work is a pendant to the preceding lot. Loosely translated, the peasant on the left says, "Damned cold" and the peasant on the right replies, "Call that cold?" This exchange is a unique example of the only true companion pieces in Rembrandt's printed œuvre.

According to Usticke, "Very scarce" (RR). We have found only approximately 7 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Bartsch 178; Biörklund 34-E; Hollstein (White and Boon) 178.
