  • Notes:
The present work is a compilation of two prints by Rembrandt, The Artist's Mother with her Hand on her Chest (1631) and Self-Portrait with Saskia (1636), in which Saskia is replaced by the artist's mother.

It is believed that this composition was created by Jean de Bary, a jeweler and art dealer who owned twenty-nine Rembrandt plates and one copy at the time of his death in 1759 and re-printed later impressions of the works. He undertook this experiment, superimposing two plates together to forge a new composition, several times with other plates.

The current work is relatively rare, with approximately seven other impressions known. These other examples are included in the collections of the British Museum, the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre, among other major museums, and rarely appear at auction.
