REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Joseph Telling his Dreams (counterproof).

Etching, 1638. 111x83 mm; 4 3/8x3 5/8 inches, thread margins. A counterproof, 17th-century impression in Biörklund's third state (of 4), before the shading between Joseph's right arms and the face of the woman with the turban; Usticke's second state (of 5); White and Boon's second state (of 3). Ex-collection unknown collector, faded ink stamp verso. Partial indiscernible watermark. A very good impression of this extremely scarce counterproof.

A counterproof is an impression taken directly from another just printed, rather than from the printing matrix (the etching plate in this case). For this reason, counterproofs are more lightly inked than the impressions from which they are taken and they are also in reverse of the original. Being in the same oreintation counterproof impressions allow the artist to gauge more earily the printing matrix itself and make any necessary changes to improve the quality of the lines. Bartsch 37; Biörklund 38-E; Hollstein (White and Boon) 37.
